Case Study

Innovation in the Cryoablation of Recurrent Pelvic Chondrosarcoma Through a Custom 3D-Printed Support

The Main Challenge

Ensuring that the "ice ball" fully covered the lesion without damaging critical structures — a challenge that was heightened in this case by:

Anatomical complexity: the pelvic location (left pubic bone) placed the target in close proximity to critical nerves (peroneal, sciatic) and urogenital structures (bladder, prostate).

CT visualization limitations: the lesion was not fully visible on conventional CT imaging, requiring advanced multimodal 3D planning that fused MRI and CT data to achieve precise segmentation of the patient's anatomy.

The latest 3D scanning technology to digitize objects

A custom positioning support device (Class I Medical Device) was designed and manufactured using large-volume FDM 3D printing in PLA, shaped to match the patient's surface anatomy.

Reproduction of the therapeutic position of the pelvic girdle and lower limbs across all three stages of the process—simulation, MRI image acquisition, and intervention—achieving full consistency throughout.

Dynamic control of cryoprobe coverage, reducing the risk of recurrence or damage caused by overextension into highly critical anatomical structures (adjacent nerves/organs).

This case demonstrates how collaboration between university hospitals with integrated Biomedical Engineering (applying innovation to real clinical cases) and technology companies such as OMNIPRO 3D can drive significant advances in medical care.

Success

As a result of this innovative approach, the procedure was completed with full precision and no complications, achieving complete coverage of the lesion while safeguarding all critical anatomical structures. This successful outcome highlights the value of custom 3D-printed solutions in enabling safer, more accurate interventions, reaffirming OMNIPRO 3D's commitment to advancing patient care through applied medical technology.
